Why shouldn’t we neglect a neck muscle contracture?

A neck muscle contracture is a type of injury that affects all types of people, not just athletes. It is important to treat them to prevent them from going further. Factors such as poor posture or a direct blow can cause the appearance of these involuntary muscle contractions, but also lack of exercise and poor nutrition.

There are three main types of neck muscle contractures. Depending on which one we are suffering from, the pain or treatment may be different.

For example, in post-traumatic contractures, the pain appears after receiving a blow to the area, is intense and is accompanied by stiffness. They are the most common in the neck and can disappear on their own in a couple of days. This could include, for example, small impacts against another person or light blows with the car.

The pain is less intense in postural contractures. Their development is much slower and they are formed by an incorrect posture carried out day after day. A clear case of postural contracture is that which affects people who work in an office. The so-called “neck knots” are common.

On the other hand, hypotonia contracture affects us when we do not have strength in the muscle and, even so, we subject it to an overload. In this case, the muscle defends itself from a possible breakage of fibers with this contraction. It is the most frequent variety in sportsmen and women.

As you can see, most of the time, the contracture can cause mild pain or even go away on its own. Therefore, it is very common that some people do not pay attention to it and try to cure it through patience and the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. This is a mistake, keep in mind that a pain is always a natural response of the body that tells us that something is not right. So, although it may recover without our help and the pain is bearable, we should not overlook it.

If a muscular contracture of the neck appears, the ideal is to go to a specialist to check the state of the muscle and determine a treatment that avoids a greater stiffness, a break of the fibers or even a chronic pain.

If we let the contracture continue longer than it should, simply because it doesn’t hurt too much and doesn’t prevent us from doing our daily routine, the subsequent treatment will be much more complicated and can lead to other types of problems such as dizziness, vertigo or recurrent headaches, among others. For this reason, it is very important not to neglect ourselves in the event of suffering a muscular contracture of the neck.
